Hawai‘i’s Big Five: A Life History

October 30, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Henke Hall 325

Sovereign Sugar investigates the life history of an industry and its environmental consequences. At the core of this story is the contest within the foreign community over control of the industry, and between the sugar elite and the natural and human environment for survival of plantation agriculture. This talk takes a fresh look at he rise of the sugar-based corporate network known as “The Big Five” which ruled island society in the 20th century and lingers today as a ghost.

Carol MacLennan is the author of Sovereign Sugar: Industry and Environment in Hawai‘i, and Professor of Anthropology at Michigan Technological University where she teaches environmental anthropology and industrial history. Her research and publishing has been on large-scale industries such as cane sugar and hard rock mining and their environmental histories.
