"Dissolved Organics- the Bread and Butter of the Sea"

Abstract:
Organic compounds bound in bread can be a highly nutritious food source; however, organic compounds bound in wood are not available for human consumption. Similarly, in the ocean organics exists in a variety of forms and shapes. Some of these “bread” compounds can be easily used by marine microbes as a food source, while “wood” is not immediately consumed. In this presentation I will discuss results on the microbial degradation of dissolved organics in the sea and explore how this varies depending on e.g. environmental factors.
