Challenges of Democratic Transitions: Perspectives from Journalists in Emerging

A panel of journalists from three emerging Asian democracies will present updates on the democratic transition in each of their countries. Mr. Saw Yan Naing from Myanmar and Mr. Kohistani from Afghanistan are former refugees who have returned to their countries to be part of the democratic transition. Mr. Ahmady is directly involved in Aceh's reconciliation and democratic transition process after the 2005 Helsinki MOU ended the Free Aceh Movement in Indonesia. All three countries have important elections coming up. The journalists are in Honolulu as part of the East-West Center’s 2014 Jefferson Fellowships.
