FUTURE PRIMAL: How Our Wilderness Origins Show us the Way Forward
November 22, 2:30pm - 4:00pmMānoa Campus, Saunders 624
Future Primal responds to the multiple crises of globalized humanity by recovering the classical project of political philosophy as “the search for the best way live.â€Â The story of the philosopher’s personal search becomes an entry into “big history:†the epic narrative of contemporary cosmology, the emergence of creative, self-reflective humanity from a southern African wilderness, on an evolving planet within an evolving universe. The reflective evolutionary perspective helps uncover in one of the oldest hunting gathering cultures on earth—the traditional San Bushmen of Southern Africa—a primal politics with the practice of a Socratic “truth quest†at its center. As we reconnect with this Socratic practice, energized by crisis, and illuminated by new insights from the philosophy of consciousness and depth psychology, we gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be human and open possibilities for radical transformation. We find that the dynamics of the philosophical search itself, as informed by primal politics, can help constitute a paradigm of the good life we seek.
