TITLE: The Liko Na Pilina Project: Hybrid ecosystems as a restoration tool

SPEAKER: Dr. Rebecca Ostertag Department of Biology & TCBES UH Hilo

WHEN: MONDAY, 7 October, at 4 pm

< WHERE: Wentworth 9

All are welcome!

Natural ecosystems are becoming homogenized by the introduction and establishment of non-native species. Our study area, the lowland wet forests of Hawai‘i, have been subject to high rates of invasion. However, non-native species removal is expensive and time-consuming, and some non-native species may be playing important roles in the community by providing ecosystem services. The Liko Nā Pilina project is developing a strategy to purposefully create new hybrid ecosystems that are mixtures of native and non-native, but non-invasive species. We describe how gathering data on species’ functional traits (relating to their resource use) led to an unbiased method for choosing species for restoration. Utilizing ecological assembly rules and species-level information, we have designed combinations of species that will hopefully serve as self-sustaining hybrid ecosystems, balancing trade-offs between supporting native biodiversity and human needs for carbon storage and other services, while at the same time experimentally testing questions about invasion resistance and ecosystem function relevant to both land managers and researchers.
