APDF: Living the Art of Hula
July 11, 7:30pm - 9:30pmMānoa Campus, Kennedy Theatre
A conversation and performance including Robert Cazimero, Michael Pili Pang, Vicky Holt Takamine.
The first half of the concert is a conversation with kumu hula Robert Cazimero, Vicky Holt Takamine and Michael Pili Pang to discuss their personal journeys in hula; how they each maintain traditions; and the process they each go through in creating new hula choreography. “We are often asked how can we call ourselves traditionalist while at the same time we focus on creative endeavors. This concert is meant to start that conversation,†commented kumu hula Michael Pili Pang.
Performances will be woven throughout the conversation to enhance the discussion as well. The second half will showcase the creative choreography of each of the featured kumu hula along with their respective hÄlau: HÄlau NÄ Kamalei O LÄ«lÄ«lehua (Cazimero), HÄlau Hula Ka NoÊ»eau (Pang), Pua AliÊ»i Ê»Ilima (Takamine).
This performance brings together three kumu hula who have been leaders in the hula community for the past three decades. Each of them have been awarded top honors at hula competitions and have excelled in taking hula beyond the shores of Hawaiʻi.
