Bollywood Mondays: 'Gangs of Wasseypur' (2012)April 8, 3:30pm - 6:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Marine Science Building 114
Gangs of Wasseypur is a gritty, daring, violent and controversial drama about decades of competition between criminal families in rural India. It is loosely based on historical events. Starring Manoj Bajpai, Gangs was screened at the Sundance Film Festival before going on to win several Indian Filmfare awards.
As The Guardian wrote in its review, "Anurag Kashyap's epic tale of criminal dynasties at war in India's wretched hinterland could well mark a turning point in Hindi cinema: a stylish, pacy and naturalistic movie... [I]t presents compelling, sexy characters spouting sharp, believable dialogue... [It] reflects the harshness and tenacity of much of Indian life, with a fantastic soundtrack that enhances the movie... Lawlessness, political corruption and family intrigues all combine to reveal a raw, bloodthirsty and blistering side of the country that few in the west will otherwise see."
This is the fifth movie in the twelfth UH Bollywood film series, running on occasional Mondays this spring. For the full semester film series schedule, please see the contact information below.
