April 5, 10:00am - 11:15amMānoa Campus, John A. Burns Hall, Room 2121
Dr. Dino Patti Djalal is the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, a speech writer, youth activist, academic, and author of a national best seller. He was previously posted to Dili, London, and Washington DC, and from 2004 – 2010 served as Special Staff for International Affairs and Presidential Spokesperson for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
As a young student, Djalal was exposed to both Islamic and western education systems. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in political science from Carleton University in Ottawa and his master’s degree in political science from Simon Fraser University. In 2000 he received a doctorate degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science completing his thesis on preventive diplomacy under the supervision of the late Professor Michael Leifer, a distinguished scholar on Southeast Asia.
Ambassador Djalal’s greatest passion is in youth affairs. In 2008 he established the "Innovative Leaders Forum" to promote innovative leadership from all sectors of Indonesian society. The Forum has held a series of public seminars presenting emerging leaders in fields of local governance, education, conflict resolution, health, bureaucratic reform, entrepreneurship, moderate Islam, and climate change.
Ambassador Djalal has written many articles for the domestic and international media, and five books including: The Geopolitics of Indonesia's Maritime Territorial Policy (1996); Transforming Indonesia (2005); and Indonesia on the Move (2006/2008). His fourth book, Harus Bisa! or Can-Do Leadership!, an Indonesian best seller with 1.7 million copies sold, is called "the best book on leadership in Indonesia†by the Jakarta Globe.
