Title of Presentation: Improving Water Quality in the American Pacific Islands
Abstract of Presentation :
The island cultures of the Pacific have thrived for centuries through careful management of limited resources, such as pure fresh water. However as populations burgeon in the Pacific Islands, contamination of groundwater, streams and surface waters have increased due to agricultural, residential and commercial pollution. The National Water Program of the USDA is helping to address these concerns in the American-affiliated Pacific Islands through regional research and extension programs. Dr. Evensen, who is the Extension Water Quality Coordinator for Hawaii, will provide an overview of water resource concerns in the islands of Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, CNMI, Palau, FSM and the Marshalls and will discuss regional programs efforts over the past six years.
