Asia and the Financial Crisis: The Case for a Coordinated Response

Peter A. Petri

Non-Resident Senior Fellow, East-West Center
Carl J. Shapiro Professor of International Finance, Brandeis University

January 20, 2009 12:00 – 1:00 pm
John A. Burns Hall Room 3012, 3rd floor

The seminar will review the emerging dimensions of the crisis in Asia and the responses governments are taking. It will examine whether uncoordinated national responses are likely to be adequate and to what extent they can deal with an important underlying cause of the crisis, the U.S.-Asia global imbalances that have accumulated over the last decade.

Dr. Peter A. Petri is Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the East-West Center and the Carl J. Shapiro Professor of International Finance at Brandeis University. He was the founding Dean of Brandeis’s International Business School from 1994-2006. He has served as a Brookings Policy Fellow, Visiting Scholar at the OECD Development Centre, Fulbright Scholar at Keio University, and consultant with the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, OECD, the United Nations and agencies of the U.S. and other governments. He has been a member of the editorial boards of the ASEAN Economic Bulletin, Journal of Asian Economics and Singapore Economic Review, and has been active in US-Asia affairs, including as former chair of the U.S. APEC Study Center Consortium. He received A.B. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Harvard University. Petri's research focuses on international trade, finance and investment, with applications to the Pacific Rim.
