Fall 2008 Faculty Lecture Series

October 29, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Manoa Campus, Hamilton Library, Room 301

Mary Babcock, Dept. of Art & Art History, presents a faculty lecture entitled, "Performing Peace: Artistic Inquiry As Basic Research."

In this presentation, Babcock explores art as not only expression, but more importantly as basic research – a systematic means of diligent inquiry. In her work, she aims at deepening our understanding of the nature of the human spirit, its strivings, and its vulnerabilities. Babcock focuses on the concept of “performing peace.” Insights for the study of peace and for conflict studies can be gleaned from the burgeoning appearance of international performance art festivals, meta-performances that cut through habitual patterns of national isolation and relationships of power and powerlessness. Babcock also looks to a contemporary focus on issues of social justice emerging in the traditionally neutral field of fiber art.
