"Filipino Seamen's and Tomboy Masculinities"
October 13, 12:30pm - 2:00pmManoa Campus, George Hall 213
A presentation by Dr. Kale Bantigue Fajardo entitled, "Transportation: Filipino Seamen's Masculinities, Filipino Tomboy Masculinities".
Based on ethnographic research in Manila, Philippines; Oakland, USA; and at sea in the Northern Pacific, "Transportation" will address the cultural politics of Filipino seafaring and sea-based migration and how Filipino maritime masculinities are constructed in ports, on ships, and at sea. In creatively analyzing both Filipino seamen's masculinities and tomboy masculinities, "Transportation emphasizes how diverse Filipino masculinities are co-created in the Philippines and in the Filipino diaspora, while also engaging methodological and "writing culture" concerns that have been important to the field of anthropology (especially post-civil rights), and which remain critical to current decolonizing movements in cultural anthropology and other fields.
