Apsarases in Art & Literature
September 15, 2008 - October 31, 2008Manoa Campus, Hamilton Library, Asia Collection, 4th floor
New Asia Collection Exhibit: “Apsarases in Art & Literature!”
From the Ṛig Veda in India, ca. 1200-900 B.C.E. ~ to Japan’s 1993 “Hiten/Hagoromo” flyby lunar orbiter ~ to the 2008 Olympics opening ceremony “fei tian” dance in China, apsarases have held an enduring place in the imagination of storytellers and artists all across Asia. Scholars have been intrigued by the striking similarities between the legends of these Asian celestial beings and their Western counterparts, such as, “swan-maidens.”
The current Asia Collection exhibit features photographs of stone-carved apsarases at three temples in Cambodia (Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, and Banteay Srei) by Rohayati Paseng, Hamilton Library’s Southeast Asia librarian. the exhibit includes displays of artistic and literary representations from books and library sources, compiled by Linda Laurence, library technician.
Come, see, and marvel at apsarases from all over Asia!
