Cultural studies has been variously described as interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and anti-disciplinary. During the last two decades it has made rapid progress making a deep impression on the thinking of humanities and social science scholars. At the same time, cultural studies has become a victim of its own success. Some complain that it has moved away from its original intentions and has begun to confine itself largely to questions of textual representation. Others delight in its embrace of poststructuralism and postmodernism. Should it be reduced to the study of popular cultures? How does the politics of culture enter into our work? If culture is a set of contested practices of representation linked to social formations, what should be our research priorities? As one commentator observed, cultural studies is a discipline continuously shifting its interests and methods both because it is in constant and engaged interaction with its larger historical contexts and because it cannot be complacent about its authority. What are the implications of this for our field? We plan to explore these and related issues in our roundtable discussion.
