Biosecurity/Crisis and High Stakes Communication Workshop

I. Laboratory Biosecurity ( approximately 1 hour 2:00-3:30 p.m.) is an integral part of good laboratory practice and an important component of biosafety. This workshop will discuss the principles of laboratory biosecurity as outlined in the fifth edition of the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL).
Specifically, the workshop will address the areas of 1) physical/facility security; 2) security of data and electronic technology systems; 3) personnel security; 4) access to laboratory areas; 5) procedures for agent inventory and accountability; 6) shipping/receiving/transferring biological agents and toxins, 7) emergency response plans; 8) reporting incidents, accidents, and breaches in security; and 9) training recommendations. At the end of the training, participants should be able to: Conduct a security vulnerability assessment, Identify security problems and devise possible solutions, Develop a biosecurity plan for their facility.
II. Crisis and High Stakes Communication Workshop (2nd Hour, approximately 3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.). This workshop is designed for all who work in facilities that contain clinical, research, and public health laboratories. The workshop is especially appropriate for those who may respond to inquires from the general public, the media, employees and their families, government officials, and health care providers.
The workshop will employ a combination of lecture, case studies, and participant activities. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should be able to: List the characteristics of high stakes communication, Explain why every organization should have a crisis communication plan, Describe 5 communication failures that kill operational sucess, List events that are likely to cause outrage Explain the crisis communication life cycle, and Develop a crisis message.
