INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

&amp;quot;Constructing, Embracing and Removing Black Ireland: A Case of the African Diaspora in Europe
and the Modern Problem of Race&amp;quot;

Dr. Elisa Joy White
Dept. Ethnic Studies, UHM

The relatively recent presence of African Diaspora communities in the Republic of Ireland, a nation that is often perceived as being homogeneously White, has forced a de-linking of race and nation. As a result, through popular discourse, media and public policy, Ireland is currently considering whether a new Irish identity is desirable, inevitable or, perhaps, preventable. This presentation will focus on high profile deportation cases involving Nigerian migrants and the related effort to forestall a changing national identity. The deportation cases are an articulation of the underlying tensions in an Irish society that works to maintain a global humanitarian reputation amidst racism, xenophobia and human rights violations. I will particularly address ways in which popular discourse and media representations lend a celebrity status to potential deportees. Their stories reflect the ways in which Ireland both embraces and rejects the changing &amp;quot;face&amp;quot; of Irishness and - as witnessed throughout Europe - grapples with the salience and futility of ethno-racial national identities.

	<div class="descr">Title of Presentation:
Expansion of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) in Montane Mainland Southeast Asia and implications for the environment and human livelihoods

Abstract of Presentation:
Montane mainland Southeast Asia (MMSEA) is a large, ecologically vital region comprising approximately half the land area of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and China&amp;apos;s Yunnan Province. It is a region of great biological and cultural diversity that has come under close scrutiny in the last several decades as a result of both real and perceived deforestation, land degradation, and most recently, the conversion from traditional agriculture, including shifting cultivation, to more permanent cash crops driven by regional and global markets. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is the major commercial crop replacing traditional agriculture and secondary forests in the region, a direct result of strong market demands from China, the world's largest consumer. Forecasts indicate global demand for natural rubber may outpace supply by 1.4 million metric tons by 2020. Asia accounts for 97% of the world&amp;apos;s natural rubber supply, with most from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Entrepreneurs from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand are investing heavily in rubber plantations in the less developed countries of the region-Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Perhaps even more startling has been the pace at which small farmers have converted from subsistence agriculture to growing rubber for commercial production. This talk will focus on where rubber is being planted, current and future demand for rubber, and implications of these changes for the environment (water, biodiversity, carbon) and human livelihoods.

Bio data for speaker:
Jefferson Fox is the Coordinator of Environmental Studies and a Senior Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu. He received his Ph.D. in Development Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He studies land-use and land-cover change in Asia and the possible cumulative impact of these changes on the region and the global environment. Dr. Fox has co-edited several books, most recently, People and the Environment: Approaches for Linking Household and Community Surveys to Remote Sensing and GIS (Kluwer Academic Press, 2003). His ongoing research includes understanding dynamic resource management systems and land cover transitions in Montane Mainland Southeast Asia, funded by the National Science Foundation; the role of land-cover change in Montane Mainland Southeast Asia in altering regional hydrological processes under a changing climate, funded by NASA. He has worked in Nepal, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China (Yunnan), and Indonesia.</div>

&quot;Towards basin-scale monthly maps of CO2 uptake in the North Atlantic Ocean&quot;

Abstract:

Basin-scale maps of surface pCO2 with high spatial and temporal resolution are needed to calculate the ocean's carbon uptake on short (~annual) timescales. In contrast to CO2 concentrations in the well mixed atmosphere, seawater pCO2 is subject to high spatial and temporal variability. The potential of monitoring North Atlantic ocean-surface pCO2 on a basin scale by combining Voluntary Observing Ship observations with ARGO float and remote sensing data respectively is explored in the context of an eddy-resolving model. The study shows that with present-day observational coverage North Atlantic CO2 uptake can be estimated with an uncertainty of about 10%.</div>

Abstract:
sp2 hybridized single layers of hexagonal boron nitride and graphene on Rh(111) and Ru(0001) form corrugated superstructures with about 3nm lattice constant. These structures are stable in air and may be used as templates for supramolecular architectures. The peculiar trapping mechanism for single molecules with a diameter of 1 to 2 nm is traced back to strong lateral electric fields within the nanostructure that can be measured with photoemission from adsorbed xenon [1]. Similarities and differences between hexagonal boron nitride and graphene will be highlighted [2].

byThomas A. Schroeder, Director, Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR) Univ. Hawaii
Abstract

Beginning in the mid-1980's a new industry has developed. The products are catastrophe risk models for extreme events. Originally targeting earthquakes and tropical cyclones ( hurricanes for U.S. interests), the models have branched into man-made hazards such as terrorism. The primary customer is the insurance industry, though Federal agencies have acquired similar models ( HAZUS). The primary issue faced in these efforts is the lack of actual detailed observations of extremely rare events. The methodology used to estimate the frequencies and consequences of these events differs from standard actuarial approaches.

I shall describe the elements of a hurricane risk model, contrast this type of model to the rain and flood estimations used by hydrologists and engineers, and discuss the intense regulatory environment associated with this industry. The risk modeling industry and the insurance industry are international enterprises. Hawaii is a small player in the global scheme but feels the impacts of decisions made nationally and internationally. </div>

December 5, 2009
John A. Burns School of Medicine ---------------

MEDICAL AND NON-MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

A FREE workshop for medical professionals and the public taught by Thanh V. Huynh, M.D.

Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 10:00 AM-12:00 Noon at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (651 Ilalo St. in Kaka&amp;#699;ako) Medical Education Building, Auditorium 315 - Public Parking available for $4 in Parking Lot C.

In this time of growing stress in our personal and work lives, mindfulness can be a critical tool to return our minds to a state of peace and to cope with the ups and downs of life more gracefully. Stress is a major factor in many health conditions, and it is present for medical professionals as well as for the people who come to them for healing. Don&amp;apos;t miss this important workshop.

What is Mindfulness???
Mindfulness is the mental quality that is associated with non-judging attention, moment by moment, to the present-time unfolding life experience without attachment to pleasantness or resistance to unpleasantness. This relaxed non-bias awareness allows one to see things clearly as they really are and learn to respond, rather than react to stressors encountered. This results in more joy and a sense of peace. Mindfulness has been successfully taught in hospitals and stress reduction clinics around the world.

What Will You Learn?

Theory:
&acirc;&acute; Benefits of the mindfulness practice, including a literature review.
&acirc;&acute; Concentration and mindfulness.
&acirc;&acute; How to establish mindfulness.
&acirc;&acute; Concept and reality.

Practice:
&acirc;&acute; Guided instruction on some techniques of mindfulness.
&acirc;&acute; Application of mindfulness in daily activities.

Dr. Thanh Huynh is a radiation oncologist holding faculty appointments with the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai&amp;#699;i and the Cancer Research Center of Hawai&amp;#699;i. He has been studying and practicing mindfulness (insight/ vipassana) meditation since 1984 and began sharing this practice with O&amp;#699;ahu prison inmates in 1992. Dr. Huynh offers regular Mindfulness classes to the public, school children and cancer patients with rewarding results. He and Dr Carolyn Gotay of the Cancer Research Center of Hawai&amp;#699;i recently completed a successful feasibility study using the internet to teach cancer patients mindfulness and are working on a national study using the same technique.

This workshop is suitable for teenagers, and no pre-registration is required.

	<div class="descr">Title of Presentation:
Effect of different charcoal types on the plant growth and soil properties over the two consecutive plantings.

Abstract of Presentation:
Charcoal as a soil amendment is an effective way to both sequester carbon and improve soil fertility. Two consecutive greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effect of charcoal with varying chemical properties on corn plant growth and soil properties. Five different types of charcoal (corn cob and kiawe chars with high volatile matter (VM) and corn cob, binchotan and Leuceana chars with low VM) produced from traditional and modern pyrolitic methods containing high and low VM content and varying ash levels were evaluated for their use as soil fertility amendments. In the first planting, corn biomass yields from soils amended with low VM corn cob charcoal was significantly higher than that of fertilizer alone treatment, suggesting synergistic effect between fertilizer and addition of low VM charcoals. Biomass yield from soil amended with high VM charcoal was significantly lower than control, suggesting the negative effect of high VM charcoal. Secondly, soil analysis after harvest showed that charcoal additions can result in significantly higher nutrient contents, lower Al toxicity, and raised pH. However, all five charcoals had no significant effect on the soil charge property. The results from the second planting showed that negative effect of high VM charcoal does not persist, suggesting that time influences the effect of VM content on the plant growth. The study results demonstrated that while immediate effects of the charcoal had been investigated in recent studies, prolonged effects of the charcoal require further exploration.

Bio data for speaker introduction:
My interest in soil came from the realization that our livelihood depends on the quality of soil we live upon. I am going to pursue Master&amp;apos;s degree in soil ecology in NREM. The Master&amp;apos;s project will look at the influence of biofuel feedstock production on soil carbon flux.</div>
