Meet the UH Board of Regents

Carl A. Carlson Jr.

Carl A. Carlson Jr.

Carlson is the founder of Hu‘ehu‘e Ventures, a firm providing real estate consulting and agricultural property management services in the state of Hawai‘i. His more than 40 years of work in Hawai‘i’s real estate, ranching and agricultural sectors includes operating experience, development, sales and acquisition of resort and ranch properties.

After having served as the General Manager of Hu‘ehu‘e Ranch for 20 years, Carlson became a trustee of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust and served in that capacity for ten years. While there, he became resident of Parker Ranch, Inc., and president of Waimea Wastewater, Inc. and was a board member of those companies. He had previously had been a board member of Hawai‘i Meat Company, Inc., Kahua Beef Sales, Ltd. and Island Commodities Corp.

Active in community affairs, Carlson served a term as chair on the County of Hawai‘i Board of Ethics. He has served two terms on the Hawai‘i State Board of Agriculture, is a former board member of the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation and of the Hawai‘i Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. Until recently, and from its inception, he served as vice president of the Kohala Center. He is currently the chair of the Advisory Committee of the Kuki‘o Community Fund, a charitable fund administered under the umbrella of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. He also serves as the facilitator of the Kona Water Roundtable and is one of its founders.

Carlson has twice served as Chairman of the Hawai‘i Leeward Planning Conference and twice been a board member of the Kona Kohala Chamber of Commerce. He is a full member of the Urban Land Institute and serves on its Recreational Development Council. He is a member of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, the Hawai‘i Cattlemen’s Association and the Hawai‘i Cattlemen’s Council. He has been a member of the University of Hawai‘i Na Koa Booster Club for many years.

Born in Wailuku, Maui, Carlson was raised in Waikapu and graduated from Baldwin High School. He obtained a bachelors of science from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. He and his wife Christine have lived in West Hawai‘i since 1969. They have four children and five grandchildren. Hobbies include family, paddling, snow skiing, hiking, traveling, running, golf, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.
