Windward Community College Chancellor’s Award
Windward Community College Chancellor’s Award Winner
Frank Mattos
2009
Frank Mattos was a professor in English at Windward Community College before his retirement in June 2009. Mattos’ students use words like “respect” and “sensitive” when speaking of him.
Always a student himself, and active in guiding teachers, Mattos was the prime mover to establish service learning at Windward for the last 14 years.
Mattos developed the academically based community service program, and there are now several hundred students involved at 36 service sites. From tutoring to teaching art at the Hawaii State Hospital, the Windward students are in the community because of Mattos’ tireless effort.
The Windward Community College Chancellor’s Award recognizes a faculty member, civil service or administrative, professional and technical employee for outstanding demonstrated work performance, service, leadership and/or fostering of excellence in higher education.
