UH Manoa Chancellor’s Citation for Meritorious Teaching 2002-2006 Award Recipients

Manoa’s Meritorious Teachers

Benjamin Bergen
Department of Linguistics

An assistant professor of linguistics, Benjamin Bergen enthusiastically teaches new views of language that challenge ideas that have dominated the field for the past 40 years.

Bergen infuses personal experiences, self-assessment and humor to his teaching style. He attracts students from all disciplines including computer science, philosophy, English and psychology, which speaks to the accessibility of his style and extent of his knowledge.

A colleague observes, "Bergen has shown his remarkable ability to break down traditional barriers between conversation and lecture, student and teacher, graduate and undergraduate."

The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Chancellor’s Citation for Meritorious Teaching recognizes Manoa faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning.
