Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching
Teaching Medal Award Winner
Susan Lum
Leeward
Susan Lum is a professor in literature at Leeward Community College.
She has proven to be an innovator with the founding of her Semester of Shakespeare program, which encourages students to explore the life and works of this literary master in creative ways.
She has proven to be a leader exemplified by her election as the 6th Wo Learning Champion as well as senate vice chair and Mission Review Committee chair.
However, it is her passion for literature and teaching that has proven to be most noteworthy. A former student praised Lum saying, “I had not only discovered a love for learning, but I had found a calling. I wanted to inspire students the way she had inspired me, so I decided to pursue studies in English which I hoped to one day teach.” This student is now an English instructor at Leeward CC and is working alongside Lum.
Beyond being a knowledgeable professor, she inspires her students with though-provoking discussions about the material. With an impeccable record of achievements, awards, service projects and innovations, Lum has distinguished herself as an integral colleague and valued member of the Leeward CC community.
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.
