Loni Delaplane is an instructor in the mathematics department at Kaua‘i Community College.

In addition to participating in a three-semester long partnership with local high school math teachers, Delaplane has collaborated with colleagues to develop and conduct two week-long Math Bootcamps and worked to make Club Math one of the largest, most active clubs on campus.

She headed the effort to accelerate the developmental math sequence, which nearly doubled the percentage of students reaching college level math.

Aside from mathematics, she has chaired the newly formed ‘Ohana committee and served as a Wo Learning Champion.

Relying heavily on student participation, she believes students learn more when they play an active role in the discovery process and are challenged to investigate new concepts.

The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students. The board also awards the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
