An assistant professor in the Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, Kerry Laiana Wong completed the first doctoral dissertation in the Hawaiian language and is a leader in his field.

Wong’s teaching philosophy is based on advancing the wellbeing of the Hawaiian people through revitalization of the Hawaiian language. His contributions to the development of a Hawaiian immersion curriculum have been considerable, particularly in the development of teaching materials.

Colleagues note that, as a Hawaiian educator, Wong is a needed role model who sets a fine example for others.

The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students. The board also awards the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
