Mānoa

Joanne Birch is a graduate teaching assistant and doctoral candidate in botany at UH Mānoa. Birch is highly motivated to serve as a role model in her teaching. She enjoys expanding students’ understanding of diversity in the scientific community, enforcing the idea that hard work, determination and self-confidence are what make a successful scientist.

Birch’s ability as a teacher was recognized by invitations to participate in three teaching workshops offered by the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Mānoa Graduate Division. She has been described as a “bright, conscientious educator with a keen sense of professionalism and desire to help others in understanding botanical principles and laboratory techniques.”

The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and UH Mānoa for 19 years.
