Elaine Yamashita
Maui Community College

A professor of humanities, Elaine Yamashita has made an impact at Maui Community College and the Maui County as a faculty member for more than 16 years.

While Yamashita has made considerable contributions locally, her current term as a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children Governing Board has taken her influence to a national level. She is the first University of Hawai‘i Community College faculty member to serve on the NAEYC board, and she has put Hawai‘i’s unique accomplishments in early childhood education in the spotlight.

Yamashita has also served as president elect, president and past president of the Hawai‘i Association for the Education of Young Children. Her generosity and willingness to give her knowledge, time and personal resources have benefited the Hawai‘i communities enormously.

The Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award has honored faculty members for significant contributions that strengthen ties between the University of Hawai’i and the community.
