Securing Paradise a talk by Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez

September 20, 2:30pm - 4:00pm
Manoa Campus, Saunders 624

The Department of Political Science global/local colloquium presents a talk by Vernadette Vicuña Gonzalez, Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and author of Securing Paradise: Tourism and Militarism in Hawai‘i and the Philippines. Her book examines the mutual entanglements of tourism and militarism as key parts of U.S. geostrategies in the region. Generating an archive from fiction and poetry, journalism, scenic highways, military bases, helicopter tours and ecotourism, Gonzalez shows how militarism and tourism work in tandem to produce gendered structures of feeling and formations of knowledge essential to U.S. empire in Asia and the Pacific.
