Edgar Heap of Birds and Shanna Ketchum-Heap of Birds Lecture

Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes has a long established critical reputation for his political and site-specific public signage projects of late 80s and early 90s.

His artistic practice has been an important influence on the development of First Nations contemporary art across North America and the world. He is also committed to working in prints, drawing, painting and sculpture. Heap of Birds has served as a visiting professor at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

At The University of Oklahoma, Professor Heap of Birds teaches in Native American Studies.

Shanna Ketchum-Heap of Birds is a citizen of the Diné/Navajo Nation. She is an independent scholar of contemporary Native American art, and has taught in the Native Studies Department at the University of Oklahoma in Norman since 2007.

Her work can be found in Third Text: Critical Perspectives on Contemporary Art, Estrago, Vision, Space, Desire: Global Perspectives and Cultural Hybridity (NMAI Edition), the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and The Hugo Boss Prize 2008 exhibition (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum). She lectures about issues in contemporary Native art, both nationally and internationally.

Heap of Birds will be selling and signing copies of his 2007 Venice Biennale book, Most Serene Republics (with DVD and essays by Lucy Lippard and Jean Fisher).
