"'Fiji is the Honolulu of the Dominion:' Tourism, Empire & New Zealand, 1900-35

October 28, 12:30pm - 2:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Sakamaki Hall A201, U H Manoa History Department Library

Dr Frances Steel, University of Wollongong, Australia, will discuss the early twentieth-century history of travel and tourism in light of colonial New Zealand's cultural and political history. That history includes changes in New Zealand's relationships with its Pacific neighbors as a result of America's push into the region with the Matson Steam Navigation Company, notably during the 1920s and 1930s.
