On the Edge of Hope and Healing: Flipping the Script of Filipinos in Hawai'i

April 25, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Henke 325

Come and witness two up-and-coming scholar-activists of the next generation speak of “Social Biography” as a liberational practice and pedagogy, and “Stations of Kalihi”—an annual pilgrimage mourning and honoring sacred sites in the Kalihi community.

This talk will peek through windows of relationality to see how we are all part of the social fabric of reality. As student leaders in this work, Ashley and Kate will share their own life stories and their connections with the story of Kalihi, exploring life writing and storytelling as community activism, witnessing, and healing practice.

Ashley Galacgac is an Ethnic Studies major at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She is a poet and community organizer with roots in Kalihi. She is pursuing graduate work in Education, hoping to develop a pedagogy of love and resistance.

Kate Kahoano is a Psychology major at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She is a writer and educator with roots in Wai‘anae and Santa Cruz, CA. She hopes to develop frameworks in psychology that articulate bridges between communities of trauma.
